"My vocation in art began with the study of the human figure under the tutelage of my late father. This is where I was introduced to the female figure and the challenges of accurately rendering it, while capturing the delicate feminine nature of the subject. It soon became my passion. The female nude is historically one of the most studied subjects in all of art, these paintings represent my appreciation of the grace and alluring nature of a beautiful woman."
– J. Jefferson
Artist William H. Jefferson chose subjects that would depict truly American images. This was born out of his ties to the lives of people like himself who made up small town America, particularly during the time of The Great Depression. For Bill Jefferson, every picture told a story. When discussing his work, he would passionately explain that he wasn't drawing a portrait, he was telling a story about part of that person's life. In November of 2009, The Library of Congress, Washington D.C., added two of William H. Jefferson's drawings to its permanent collection.

"Inspired by the magnificent vista of the Wisconsin Northwoods and the many applications for birch bark used by local artisans and early Native Americans in the region, I have developed the concept for the texturized relief paintings on birch bark you see here."
